WSA 2012 year over.

14 Nov 2012 | Hits: 448

altMy first year on the WSA world tour has just ended. I have played 16 tournaments in 12 months and have improved my ranking from 276 to 116.

This year has had many ups and downs. The biggest down would have to be making the decision to move to Melbourne from New Zealand and pursue my dream as a squash player. The squash part was easy to decide, where ever I was going to live, I was going to play squash. But over here in Australia, I knew I would get many more opportunities to go further in the sport. So I made the sacrifice on leaving my home and coming over to the wonderful city of Melbourne. I have never looked back.

People ask me if I will ever move back to New Zealand. That, I do not know. But what I do know is that I am enjoying it so much and it has been the best decision for my squash. A year later and I am dead set on staying in Australia and even decided to change my flag to represent Aussie on the world tour. Squash Aus have been amazingly welcome to me and support me as an athlete.

The amount of people I have met on tour has been fantastic, some of which have been incredibly inspiring. The biggest booster for me was being able to play in the Australian Open in Canberra. I didn't qualify, but I stayed on to watch all of the main draw matches on the full glass court. I was told I looked like "a kid in a candy store." I was fascinated with the level of squash, getting to watch squash stars such as Nicol David, Ramy Ashour, Laura Massuro and Omar Mossad. Watching the event gave me a dream to want to play at that level on one of those amazing glass courts.

But all in all, this has to be one of the greatest years of my life. Even though I miss my friends and family at home in New Zealand, I wouldn't change this year for the world. I have learnt so much and  have picked up many tips for the future. I just can't wait for next years WSA tour.
