My Story
Wee Wern started squash at the age of 8 and her first coach was Nicol David's elder sister, Lianne David. Squash was just a weekend activity and she never thought she would have made it thus far. Born and bred in Penang, Malaysia, Wee Wern's first shot to stardom was winning the Scottish Junior Open Under 11 category. She never looked back then.
Amongst her best achievements in her junior days are three times Asian Junior Champion and of course winning the prestigious British Junior Open Under 19. At the age of 17, Wee Wern was offered numerous scholarships to pursue her education in renowned universities in the United States and it was a very tough decision.
Wee Wern decided to venture into the professional circuit and is now in the top 10 of the world rankings, highest of 6 in Feb 2013, making her the second Malaysian female squash player ever to break into the top 10 besides World Number 1, Nicol David. Some of her best achievements on tour was winning the China Open (Gold 45) and also making the Quarter-Finals of the World Open in year 2010, 2011 and 2012.
Still training and based in her home club in Penang, Wee Wern has been working with her coach Aaron Soyza since 2001 and has no plans to move abroad. She recently signed with Malaysia's low cost carrier airline, AirAsia as her core sponsor alongside her other sponsors namely Harrow, Puma Apparels, LineBreak compression wear, Herbalife Nutrition and Mizuno Footwear.
